Chandigarh, January 13
For speedy disposal of refuse, the UT Administration has started process for setting up a solid waste management plant at the upcoming grain, fruit and vegetable market in Sector 39.
The State Agricultural Marketing Board, UT, has invited expression of interest from agencies for setting up the plant. The plant will process the waste of the Sector 26 mandi, which generates 20 to 25 tonnes of bio-degradable waste and 1.5 to 2 tonnes of solid waste every day.
An official said when the Sector 39 mandi would become operational, its waste would be processed in the plant.
The board has earmarked nearly 2 acres at the mandi for the waste plant. The Administration would soon hold an auction of 92 shops at the new grain market.
In April last year, the UT Administration had decided to auction 92 shop-cum-offices (SCOs) in Sector 39 on a freehold basis, with each SCO measuring 120 sq yd and carrying a reserve price of Rs 3.7 crore. The establishment of this market in 2002 was aimed at decongesting the overcrowded Sector 26 grain market, which had no room left for expansion.
The auction will be conducted in accordance with the Chandigarh Estate Rules, 2007, with preference to existing licensees of the Sector 26 market. Of the approximately 170 licensees, 30 deal in grains and the rest in fruits and vegetables.
Upon the successful allotment of shops in the new Sector 39 market, the de-notification process for the Sector 26 market will proceed in a phased manner.
