Around 1,000 Congress supporters along with Congress candidates thronged the tehsil office since morning. Police personnel manned the nearby areas and put up barricades outside the office to prevent traffic chaos in the area.

Yesterday, 31 Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidates had filed their nomination papers in the presence of Dera Bassi MLA NK Sharma.

Earlier, Udayvir Dhillon was tipped to contest the polls from this ward but he finally chose ward No. 12. Dharminder today said that Udayvir Singh Dhillon had shied away from the direct contest.

BJP faces heat

In Dera Bassi, high drama prevailed in the MC office when the BJP candidates were filing their nomination papers for the 19 wards of the council. A group of farmers led a protest against the three agricultural laws and tried to enter the building, but heavy police presence ensured that the situation remained under control. — TNS
