Panchkula, June 15

In order to provide relief to residents living along the four-km drain starting from the MDC, Sector 1, to Rajiv and Indira colonies, Panchkula, Haryana Vidhan Sabha Speaker and local MLA Gian Chand Gupta today laid the foundation stone for beautification of drain and tree plantation programme on its bank worth Rs4 crore.

The beautification work would be carried out by the Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran. The target has been fixed to complete the work in the next six months.

Under this programme, 100 benches, 651 Ashoka and neem trees, 648 plumeria and mango trees and 2,598 shrubs will be planted along the drain. Apart from this, a green lawn will also set up on 3.25 acres.

Gupta said it was a pending demand of people, especially from the MDC, Sector 1, and Sector 4. Due to the natural drain passing through these sectors, people were facing a lot of difficulties. He had promised in the election manifesto that both drains - one in Sector 2 and 4 and another one from Sector 1 to Rajiv and Indira colonies - would be beautified. He said a suitable place was being identified to start a food street or night food street.

Gupta said the announcement of making Panchkula a metropolitan city by Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar was going to be a boon for the city. Several reputed private universities had shown interest in setting up their institutes in the education city to be set up here. Two big hospitals would also be established in Panchkula. As a result, better health facilities would be available for city residents. Referring to the Film City, he said Panchkula was situated in the foothills of Himachal and it would serve as a base camp for the film industry.

Gupta said he had been making efforts to develop Morni as a tourist hub. In the same series, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar would launch trekking, paragliding and hot balloons and other adventure sports in Morni on June 20.

He said several steps were being taken for the development of Panchkula. He was confident that in the coming two to three years, Panchkula would make a distinct identity not only at the national level, but also at the international level.
