Chandigarh: Sports Secretary reviews infra upgrade at stadium, lake complex
The UT Administration’s Sports Secretary visited the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium and Lake Sports Complex to review the upgrade of infrastructure. The Sector 16 stadium is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade to meet national-level standards.
CB Ojha, Chief Engineer, briefed the inspecting team on the progress of various works, noting that the playing field has been completely re-laid with high-quality turf to enhance bounce, grip and durability.
The drainage system has also been upgraded to prevent waterlogging, particularly during the monsoon season. In addition, four new practice pitches have been developed to support professional-level training. The project is expected to complete by August 15.
The team also inspected the Lake Sports Complex, a multidisciplinary facility catering to swimmers, squash players and tennis players. The Chief Engineer said the tender for the renovation of the swimming pool had already been awarded, with work scheduled to begin post the annual winter closure.
The renovation includes upgrades to the filtration system, tiling, locker rooms, pool decks and spectator seating. Sustainability has been prioritised, with features planned for water conservation and recycling. The Engineering Department is also preparing a Rough Cost Estimate (RCE) for the renovation of the tennis and squash courts. Proposed enhancements include the installation of synthetic playing surfaces and advanced lighting systems to facilitate evening matches and practice sessions. Tendering for these works is expected to commence shortly, with implementation to follow in phases.
Sorabh Kumar Arora, Director Sports, emphasised the department’s commitment to developing inclusive, accessible and modern infrastructure aligned with national and international standards. He stated that the infrastructure boost will benefit both grassroots and elite athletes, ensuring no talent is left behind.
The Secretary, Sports, issued firm directions to ensure time-bound completion of works.
