A large number of stray cattle are roaming freely in Phase 9, Mohali. They spoil the beauty of parks and increase the risk of road accidents. They are a nuisance for pedestrians, especially senior citizens and children. The Mohali MC should take immediate action in this regard.

MC should maintain parking lots itself

Since the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation canceled its contract with a Mumbai-based firm in March last year, the civic body has been looking after all paid parking lots in the city by deploying its own staff members. The parking rates at present are Rs 10 for cars and Rs 5 for two-wheelers, which are not much of a trouble. After smart parking is launched in the city, people have to shell more due to pay-per-hour system and parking charges will also be increased by 20 per cent every year. The MC should keep maintaining the paid parking lots itself as it has been doing since March 2019. Who can guarantee that the two new contractors will work according to the terms and conditions of the MoU?

Ensure proper services at parking

The MC decision to appoint two companies for operating paid parking lots in the city from February is a welcome step. The MC must ensure efficient management of parking lots by the contractors. Usually, parking fee is paid right at the entry to the parking lot, but no one is present on the spot for helping vehicles with proper parking, causing inconvenience and trouble. People won’t mind paying for parking if appropriate services are offered to them. The MC should make sure that the companies are heavily penalised if they fail to help. It should be a win-win situation for all stakeholders.
