Streamline books availability, says social justice council head
Kamaljit Singh Panchhi, president, National Human Rights Social Justice Council of India, has written to the UT Administration to take serious note of the challenges being faced by parents regarding purchase of school books. “Many parents are struggling to buy textbooks due to an apparent monopoly created by private schools in collusion with bookshops and publishers.
Thousands of students are studying in Chandigarh and only a limited number of bookshops are authorised to sell the required books. As a result, parents are forced to buy books from select book stores, often at high prices. Similarly, only a few shops are permitted to sell school uniforms, adding to the financial burden of families,” said Panchhi.
He along with other members of the council said that the Administration should ensure that school textbooks are readily available at all book stores and even on school premises .
“This will prevent parents from standing in long queues and struggling to procure essential learning material. The Administration must take necessary steps to facilitate a smoother education process, ensuring that children receive the resources they need to excel in their studies,” added Kamaljit Panchhi.
