Chandigarh, February 21
Saurabh Yadav, a third-year student of Dr SS Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology (UICET), was allegedly beaten up by SFS (Student for Society) members here today.
While the ABVP has come in support of the student, the SFS has denied allegations levelled against the party.
Emanual Nahar, DSW, said he would consider the issue on Monday. Yadav, narrating the incident, said: “While coming to the boys’ hostel no 3, I saw two boys beating up a person and then they ran away. They brushed past me and when I left the hostel, another boy came running towards me with a stick in his hand and asked me about the two boys who were beating up that person. No sooner, 12 boys, armed with sticks, came charging towards me and punched me. When they came to know that I wasn’t the person they were looking for, they went away.”
Denying any involvement, SFS president Varinder said: “As the recent incidents of clash between a few students of the UICET have surfaced, we want to bring your attention to the issue of ragging. The university has a responsibility towards making sure that no ragging takes place inside our campus. While resolving a clash dated February 20, in which certain students attacked a student taking an anti-ragging campaign inside the department, the warden of the hostel threatened that no student can take out an anti-ragging campaign without the intervention/permission of a university official.”
Nahar shared: “It’s an inter-department conflict and students reached a compromise. Then, the ABVP alleged that the SFS was involved. In the evening, we received a complaint from the SFS too. We will be looking into the matter on Monday.”
GUARD BEATEN UP
A guard at Panjab University, Kamlesh Kumar, was beaten up by a bunch of students, who had allegedly had a tiff with the guard on February 6. He said: “I have previously had a fight with some boys from the Human Rights Department. Today, they came masked and beat me up, but I was quick to defend myself.” PU’s Chief of Security Ashwani Kaul shared: “This is the second time that such an incident happened and a complaint has been registered with the police too.”
