The Panjab University Bachao Morcha staged a demonstration at the Student Centre today to press for the Senate elections as their protest entered 93rd day. The morcha members also protested against notices issued to two research scholars over burning of an effigy of Vice-President and PU Chancellor Jagdeep Dhankhar during his visit to the university.

Holding placards and raising slogans calling for an action on their demands, the protesters temporarily closed access to the offices of the Dean of Student Welfare (DSW), Dean of Student Welfare (Women) and Assistant Dean of Student Welfare located on the first floor of the Student Centre building.

They expressed concern over the prolonged absence of a governing body, with the dissolution of the Senate. “The Senate must be reinstated to ensure transparency and accountability in the university’s governance. It also secures Punjab’s rightful role in Panjab University’s affairs,” said a protester.

While the protest remained peaceful, students alleged that they have faced challenges in recent months, including stricter administrative measures.

The university authorities, meanwhile, reiterated the importance of maintaining decorum on the campus. Vice-Chancellor Prof Renu Vig has previously stated that the administration remains committed to ensuring a conducive environment for academics and research.

The protesters, however, maintained that their actions aim to restore democratic processes within the institution. They have vowed to continue their demonstrations until the Senate elections are announced, underscoring that the matter impacts not just students but the university’s broader governance.
