Students debate AI regulation, stability in West Asia

The second edition of The Tribune Model United Nations (MUN), sponsored by Chitkara University and powered by Grid Advertising, began at The Tribune School in Sector 29 here today. The two-day event under the theme, ‘Where voices shape visions and visions shape the future’, attracted a massive response from the Tricity’s top schools on the inaugural day.

Justice Aman Chaudhary of Punjab and Haryana High Court inaugurated the event in the presence of Gurbachan Singh Jagat, member of The Tribune Trust, Amit Sharma, General Manager, The Tribune, Rani Poddar, Principal, The Tribune School, and other dignitaries.

On the opening day, students participated in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) exploring the regulation of Artificial Intelligence and governance for sustainable development. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) addressed the prevention of regional spill overs from the Israel-Gaza conflict and stability in the West Asia. The Human Rights Council held a debate on torture, arbitrary detention and extrajudicial killings in conflict zones.

The events will continue on Sunday, in addition to the events revolving around international press, journalism and photography committees. Over 250 students from schools across the Tricity registered on the opening day. The events were conducted under the supervision of faculty of The Tribune School.

Addressing the gathering, Justice Chaudhary said, “There’s no dearth of learning. Such events encourage students to explore their potential, know the world and indulge in a thought-provoking process for an overall growth. I must congratulate The Tribune for hosting such an event for school students. I am sure it will be exciting, the discussion will be wonderful and the participants will take home some unforgettable memories.”

Gurbachan Jagat introduced the model of United Nations to the young participants and shared its history and insights to help them understand the concept. “I appeal to everyone present, you are the leaders of tomorrow. I wish all participants the best,” he added.

Another highlight of the event was a stall set up by Project UdaanBhumi, a student-led NGO founded by Aanvi Madhu Chitkara, which inspired change through environmental awareness and action. A team from the NGO, led by its founder Aanvi, showcased their initiative “Dedicate a Tree” — an emotional and impactful campaign that allows people to plant a tree in the honour of someone they love, creating a living memory and contributing to a greener planet.
