They say every person should have the experience of visiting a police station and a court once in a lifetime. That moment came for students of the Government Senior Secondary School, Bakarpur, today morning when they visited their area police station — IT City police station — today morning.

Class VII student Harman Singh went one step ahead and had the honour of officiating as Station House Officer (SHO) and sit on the revolving chair which evokes fear, respect and awe among many.

Class X student Rajmeet Kaur also took charge as the woman SHO, embodying the message of woman empowerment as students in the room giggled and laughed at the prospect of this dream coming true one day.

Not the one to keep the grim realities of life away from dreams, cops also made it a point to give them a tour of lock-up as well. “This is what happens when you stray away from your life goals and fall in bad company. Then, there is no mercy,” said Harsimran Singh Bal, DSP City-2, sounding a note of caution among the impressionable minds.

Students also got to know the way police functions, how an SHO functions in day-to-day dealing, how an FIR gets registered, and case files are dealt with.

Cops gave students a guided tour of the entire police station. At the end, students planted saplings in the compound with a hope that one day they may come here as police officers and see for themselves how an idea germinated in the service of society.

Students said they got to learn how to act tough, while cops said their hearts felt tender for a while.

Commenting on the police-students interaction, Bal said, “It was a pleasant change for the police personnel as well to interact with innocent, little children and evoke tenderness in every heart. We look forward to seeing more of schoolchildren coming here as visitors and going here with a feeling of serving society one day.”
