The Panjab University (PU) authorities cleared that no hostellers from neighbouring states will be allowed to stay in the campus, while arrangements will be made for those who are from faraway states and have genuine reasons.

The hostellers were demanding permission to stay back in the hostels.

The authorities suggested that the wardens should prepare a data in order to spot those who are living here without any reason, who have genuine reasons to stay and who need help to reach to their native places, to take the further call.

A meeting in this regard was held today under the chairmanship of both DSWs and wardens.

“We have suggested that the wardens should prepare a data and we will act accordingly. Those students from neighbouring states who are staying here without any valid reason have to go back to their native place. If they wanted to stay here they have to give us valid and genuine reason,” said SK Tomar, DWS. He further added, “While those from faraway states and have genuine reasons will be allowed to stay here. We will try to make some arrangements for them. We have not or will not force any genuine student to leave the hostel. International students, who wish to go back home as there are no classes or teaching, can also approach us with their expression of interest so that we can arrange their return with the help of whatever resources we have. We are taking this decision considering the situation arising in Chandigarh.”

Meanwhile, on the second consecutive day, hostellers staged a protest at the Student Centre. Though no major students’ political parties were involved in the protest, the students demanded that they should be allowed to stay back here. “The authorities have said that they will not force students from faraway states. I stay in a remote area of Uttar Pradesh and it’s not feasible for me to stay to travel to my hometown. If the authorities force me to go back, I will surely undergo protest, said Dheeru, who is visually impaired and a research scholar enrolled last year.

Among the other major concern of the students was how will they commute to their home town or if they are asked to get quantratine at their native place. “We stay in remote location of Himachal Pradesh and it’s not possible for us to go back. Even if we do, we will be asked to remain home quantratine for several days which is against harassment for us. We are living under no-contact from outer word in the campus and not even meet our friends here. We are safer here,” said Lokesh, another student.
