Sukhna Lake at 2 feet below danger mark

Following rainfall in the catchment area, the water level in the Sukhna Lake increased to 1,161 feet today. It is now 2 feet below the danger mark of 1,163 feet.

The UT Engineering Department has deployed officials at the regulator end on a 24x7 basis. CCTV cameras have also been installed to monitor the water level.

A control room has been set up to coordinate with district administrations of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula for a proper communication during the opening of floodgates. According to officials, the floodgates would be opened to release excess water into Sukhna Choe if the water level crossed the danger mark.

The department had opened the floodgates to check their working condition on June 28.

Floodgates were opened four times in 2023, six times in 2022, and five times in 2021. Opening of two floodgates in August 2020 caused a widespread deluge in the low-lying areas of Zirakpur situated alongside the Sukhna Choe. On September 24, 2018, the floodgates were opened after 10 years.
