Sunday market brings back garbage heaps at Chhoti Baradari

Restarted after over six months of the lockdown due to Covid-19 pandemic, the Sunday market has brought back garbage pangs for Chhoti Baradari Beant Singh Complex and adjoining areas. The Municipal Corporation, Patiala, has failed to regulate garbage disposal produced and discarded in the open at the market area.

The weekly market is a nuisance for office-goers in the complex, at the car bazaar and on the languages department road which is filled with vendors who dump plastic bags, eatable and cardboard waste in the open and within the premises of the complex by the evening.

“The weekly menace has started yet again. Ideally, they should shift the Sunday market elsewhere for the benefit of the area. If the MC can’t shift the Sunday market elsewhere, they should at least regulate garbage disposal,” an office-goer quipped.

Another office-goer added, “The MC is carrying out a Swachhta Pakhwada from October 2 to 17. The activity started in the name of celebrating Gandhi Jayanti toward cleanliness will not be fruitful if it can’t make sure people dispose off garbage as per prescribed laws.”

Joint Commissioner Lal Vishwas said, “The normal notion among the public is that the MC is responsible for managing the garbage. The people who run shops at the Sunday market are allowed keeping in view their livelihood. We are not getting due cooperation from the general public in propel disposal of garbage. People should abstain from littering in the area else we will issue challans.”
