Investigations into the murder of nurse Sarabjit Kaur have revealed that suspect Maninder Singh, who was arrested by the UT police from the office of a news channel yesterday, had tricked the victim by sending her a fake email, saying she had been selected in AIIMS, Bathinda.

The suspect wanted her to come to Chandigarh that was why he had sent her the fake email, which mentioned that she would have to undergo three months’ training at the PGI before joining AIIMS.

The police said the suspect’s behaviour did not seem to be normal.

“In 2010 also, Maninder had murdered his female friend and now he is suspected of murdering another woman. This is not normal. He doubted that both victims were cheating on him, following which he eliminated them in a fit of rage, a cop said.

Meanwhile, the UT police today got five-day police remand of the suspect. Police officials said the knife used in the crime and the mobile phone of the victim were yet to be recovered.

“The suspect wanted to read the chat between Sarabjit and her brother’s brother-in-law with whom she was in touch following which he took her mobile phone,” police sources said.

On the day of the incident, the same person had sent messages to the victim, as to why she was not talking to him, which were read by the suspect, they said.

Sarabjit, a resident of Kakra village in Sangrur district, had checked into Hotel Sky with Maninder Singh on December 30. She was later found murdered in room number 301 on the afternoon of January 1. The suspect had left the hotel a few hours later after checking in and he was absconding since then. After absconding for around two-weeks, walked into the new channel’s office and confessed before the camera that he had murdered his friend since she was cheating on him.

During his run, Maninder stayed in various parts of Punjab including Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Sangrur etc. “We will visit all places where he had stayed,” a cop said. The victim’s elder brother, meanwhile, was called to the Sector 31 police station.

Car recovered from Patiala

Maninder, who was on the run, had returned to Chandigarh on Wednesday after which he went to Baltana and from there he took an auto up to Hallo Majra light point from where he went to the office of the news channel. Cops said they had already recovered his car from Patiala.
