With wedding season around the corner, the jewellers’ market in Kharar has had to brace for theft incidents on a daily basis. On Monday night, a suspected thief, while trying to flee, fell from a 15-foot-high platform straight into the feet of a security guard.
Getting up in no time, the cocky youth, instead of trying to flee, pounced on the guard and grabbed his throat. When the helpless guard and a housewife raised an alarm, ‘chor, chor, chor...’, passersby rushed to the guard’s aid.
Soon a crowd gathered, and a telephonic ordeal began. They kept calling the police for an hour; however, all their distress calls fell on deaf ears. A bit frustrated but not defeated, the artisans and the guard took it upon themselves to take the suspect to the police station.
While handing over the suspect to the police, one of the artisans got a bit overenthusiastic and tried to film the incident. In the eyes of an enraged cop, he slapped him repeatedly and sent them all back home empty-handed.
On Tuesday morning, a few disgruntled jewellers went up to meet Kharar DSP Karan Singh Sandhu and narrate the wrongdoing of his subordinate. Sources said the DSP has assured the jewellers to take appropriate action against the erring cop.
On Saturday, around 5.30 am, another plucky thief took up the stairs straight to the third floor of the shop and bundled currency garlands worth Rs 2.5 lakh in a sack. While making his escape, he chanced upon the cash box, only to find Rs 2 lakhs in it too. The shopowner, Rakesh, said he saw in the CCTV footage that the thief and a girl had come to the shop a day earlier to do a recce. Police said the suspect has been identified and will be nabbed soon.
