Three faculty members of the Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh, Prof Alakesh Manna, Prof Kamal Kumar and Prof Sandeep Kumar have been named in the list of top 2 per cent scientists of the world released on Wednesday by a team of scientists from Stanford University and the Elsevier BV-A, a leading science publisher.

Prof Alakesh Manna has been recognised for his career-long contributions to research from 2002 to 2024. A faculty member of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Prof Manna is the recipient of the Prof DN Trikha Excellence in Research Publication Award (2010) and the Best Research Paper Award at WCE London (2016). He has authored two books and is also a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the Institution of Engineers (India).

Dr Kamal Kumar, Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department, has been recognised in the ‘Authors Single Year List-2024’. This marks the fourth consecutive year he has received this honour. His groundbreaking research focuses on magnesium-based biodegradable implants, including bone scaffolds, microstructure refinement and multi-layered surface coatings to control the degradation rate in such implants.

Prof Sandeep Kumar from the Physics Department has been recognised in both single year and career-long research categories in the field of materials science. His work centres on advanced functional materials and nanomaterials-based devices for environmental and healthcare applications. With over 14,500 citations, Prof Kumar’s research has been published in numerous international journals.
