Chandigarh saw four deaths and 142 new coronavirus cases, the UT’s evening health bulletin showed—the second consecutive day the union territory recorded a significant spike in cases.

One of the four who died was a toddler. The other three were over 60. All four died on August 22.

A 1.9-month-old baby girl who had acute malnutrition, severe anaemia, infantile tremor syndrome and an acute kidney injury died at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).

The other three—a 70-year-old woman from Sector 40 who was diabetic, had hypothyroidism, and a lung disease, a 64-year-old old woman from Manimajra who was diabetic and had hypertension, and a 68-year-old man who was diabetic, had hypertension and suffered from chronic kidney infection—died at Sector 32’s Government Medical College and Hospital.

Chandigarh’s 142 new cases take the city’s COVID-19 infections to 2,918. The UT’s death toll stands at 37.

Chandigarh has been recording a significant spike in COVID-19 over this past week—the UT’s recorded 702 cases in less than a week since August 17.
