Top seed Sakranti logs easy win in national ranking meet

Top seed Delhi’s Sakranti Chauhan moved into the girls’ U-14 semifinals by logging an easy win at the ongoing Roots AITA CS(7) National Ranking Championships. Sakranti registered a 6-1 6-2 win over Punjab’s Mehreen Kaur to march into the next round.

Punjab’s Tanya Bhatnagar overpowered a tough challenge by Avni Uttam. Tanya won the opening set 6-1, but Avni bounced back strongly with a 4-6 verdict in the second set. In the decider, both players were neck-and-neck, but it was Tanya who had the last laugh by clinching a 7-6(4) win. Japman Kaur also moved ahead by defeating Harshita Vij 6-2 6-3.

In the boys’ U-14 quarterfinal, top seed Chandigarh’s Yatharth Wadhera struggled a bit to overpower Punjab’s Yugraj Mahi. Wadhera was on the roll by winning the opening set 6-1, but Mahi bounced back strongly to win the next set 4-6.

In the final set, Wadhera maintained a good composure and recorded a 6-0 win to march into the semis. While Punjab’s Taanish Nanda easily defeated Mayank Gupta of Jammu & Kashmir 6-1 6-0, another Punjab player Mahijith Singh faced a tough resistance from Chandigarh’s Shaurya Bisht. The first set was decided in a tie-break, as Mahijith managed to log a 7-6(5) win. In the second set, Bisht played well and returned with a 3-6 verdict in his favour. However, in the final, Mahijith once again kept his nerves calm and posted a 6-3 win. Haryana’s Harsh Marwaha defeated Gurshaan Singh 6-4 7-5.

Adeshbir Singh ousted Shaurya 6-4 6-4 in the boys’ U-16 quarterfinal. Taanish defeated Wadhera 6-1 6-0 and Vrishin Awasthi stunned third seed Japnit Charaya 6-3 6-0. In the last match, Harsh toppled second seed Harman Singh in straight sets 6-1 6-4.

The girls’ U-16 quarterfinal matches were decided in straight sets, as Avni Uttam defeated Sakranti Chauhan 6-3 6-3, Japji Kaur ousted Aanya Tandon 6-2 6-3, Ditti Prajapat outplayed Mehreen Kaur 6-2 6-1 and Aaradhya Tandon overpowered Ekam Kaur 6-2 6-3.
