The Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM) has collected over Rs 15 lakh as relief fund for victims of floods in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.

In its second meeting today, the executive body passed a resolution thanking the Central Government for the recent historic cuts in GST rates, which they believed would boost their turnover. The CBM resolved to launch welfare schemes for traders, their families and staff in the memory of Inder Lal Batra, the founder president of the body.

CBM president Sanjiv Chadha highlighted the organisation’s key achievements over the past three months. Diwakar Sahoonja, vice-chairman of the body, announced that all founder members would be given the status of lifetime members, whether in business or not, and welfare schemes would be implemented to provide financial assistance and scholarships to the needy kin of all traders and their staff.

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.

The Tribune, the largest selling English daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the newspaper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.

The Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
