Tribune flyover a bone of contention
This refers to a news item, ‘Bansal raises the pitch against Tribune flyover’ (Chandigarh Tribune, January 7). It was nice to hear the views of former Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal steadfastly opposing the construction of the Tribune flyover. Curiously enough, he also opined that such a proposal, which will have far-reaching architectural, heritage, aesthetical and financial implications, should not be rushed through. But why did it take him so long to write to the UT Administrator expressing his strong sentiments against such a hot-bedded issue? The experts are in favour of long-term solutions such as construction of a bypass and ring road, Bansal, too, favours a ring road around Chandigarh so as to make sure that no inter-state traffic from Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh (not bound for Chandigarh) enters the city. But sadly, any ‘worthy’ solution to the extant problems concerning the city’s traffic jams continues to hang fire in the absence of the much-needed ‘unanimity’. Needless to say, the extant indecisiveness and dithering on this count is bound to further aggravate the situation. How about constructing ‘subways’ (in a time-bound manner) at all prominent traffic prone zones across the city?

Counsellors needed
Students are nation builder, but they need guidance while growing up. There is a shortage of counsellors in government schools in Chandigarh for holistic development of students. Thus, we see behavioural problems among them which is a hindrance in ensuring a bright future for them. Counsellors play an important role in quality of education. It is essential to fill all vacant posts of counsellors.
