The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has sought Rs 28 crore as a special grant from the UT Administration for re-carpeting and maintenance of V-3 roads falling under its jurisdiction.

Sources said Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar wrote to the UT Administration in this regard on Monday. Due to the scarcity of funds the MC has not been able to maintain the roads for long, the letter reads. In view of this, it is requested that the required funds for the maintenance and re-carpeting should be given to civic body, it added.

The Chandigarh Tribune had, on April 28, highlighted the bad condition of the roads. V-3 are the sector-dividing roads and handed over to the MC, along with other departments, for maintenance.

While the councillors had rejected an agenda for handing over the roads to the Administration, the MC had failed to get the funds for maintenance. The agenda was brought before the general house in the last meeting on March 25 to hand over V-3 roads to the Chandigarh Administration, but all councillors rejected it.

Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla has already raised the issue before the Chief Secretary and demanded funds for re-carpeting V-3 roads.
