Tributes paid to Prof Bambah

A distinguished gathering of scholars, former students, jurists and well-wishers attended a memorial service held in the honour of Prof RP Bambah, one of India's foremost mathematicians and former Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, at the Sector 19 community centre today.

Prof Bambah passed away on May 26 at the age 99. The event was graced by several eminent personalities, including former VCs of PU Prof Arun Grover and Prof KN Pathak, former VC of Punjabi University Prof BS Ghuman and former Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal.

Also present were retired doctors from PGI, judges of the High Court, and senior advocates.

Prof Bambah’s students Prof Rajinder Jeet Hans-Gill, Prof Madhu Raka and Prof Sudesh Kaur Khanduja fondly recalled his brilliance, mentorship, and warmth.

The prayer meeting was live-streamed, connecting distant family and friends from across the globe.

Prof Bambah’s daughters Bindu A Bambah and Sucharu Khanna shared heartfelt words about their father’s legacy. They remembered him as a man of deep intellect and kindness, emphasising his lifelong generosity, including his final wish to donate his body for the advancement of science and medicine.

What struck many as the most poignant moment was a short poem shared by Bindu, reflecting on how her father's spirit continues to live on: “In Vidur's financial zeal, in Dhananjay's sharp scientific appeal, and through Sucharu and my generous heart”.
