Tricity braces for heavy rain: Orange alert issued for Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana
The maximum and minimum temperatures in Chandigarh have risen slightly over the past 24 hours, following a dip yesterday. Although the temperatures have increased, the overcast sky and moderate winds have provided some relief from the scorching heat in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula.
According to the weather forecast, Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places on Sunday, prompting an orange alert. On Saturday, the maximum temperature in Chandigarh increased by 2.1 degrees Celsius after dropping by 2.7 degrees Celsius on Friday. Similarly, the minimum temperature rose by 1.1 degrees Celsius after decreasing by 0.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday night.
While Chandigarh and Mohali remained dry, Panchkula received 1.5 mm of rainfall during the day. The weather department has predicted a partly cloudy sky with possible thunderstorms and rain in the Tricity region for the next five days, until June 26. Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at speeds of 40-50 km/h in isolated areas of Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana until June 27, with forecasts indicating heavy rainfall.
The maximum temperature is expected to remain below 34 degrees Celsius for the next five days. Residents experienced a relatively warm night on Friday, with the minimum temperature reaching 27.8 degrees Celsius. Faridkot in Punjab and Sirsa in Haryana recorded the highest minimum temperature of 30 degrees Celsius, making them the warmest towns in the region on Friday night.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast further relief from the hot weather conditions over the next six days. According to Meteorological Centre Chandigarh, the department’s observatory at Sector 39 recorded a maximum temperature of 36.3 degrees Celsius, while the Indian Air Force (IAF) airport logged 35.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
Sirsa remained the hottest place in the region on Saturday, with a maximum temperature of 40.8 degrees Celsius, while Bathinda recorded a maximum temperature of 38.8 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest town in Punjab. Pathankot in Punjab and Sonepat in Haryana experienced the least warm nights, with minimum temperatures of 24 and 24.7 degrees Celsius, respectively.
IMD reported a fall of 1 degree Celsius and a rise of 2.5 degrees Celsius in the average maximum temperature compared to the previous day, with the mercury remaining below normal by 1.9 degrees Celsius in Punjab and near normal in Haryana. The department has predicted a gradual decrease of 3 to 4 notches in the maximum temperature over the next three days.
The temperatures in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula are expected to range from 31 to 34 degrees Celsius (maximum) and 25 to 27 degrees Celsius (minimum), with a possibility of rain and thunderstorms until June 26. Panchkula remained the coolest place in the Tricity region on Saturday, with Chandigarh being the hottest and Mohali standing second.
