Tricity to get third synthetic track at Sec 78 sports complex by year end
In a major boost to local athletes, the Sector 78 sports complex in Mohali will have tricity’s third synthetic track by year end. After Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector 3, in Panchkula, and Sector 7 sports complex in Chandigarh, the multi-purpose facility in Sector 78 is all set to have an international standard eight-lane track for athletes.
The work for laying the track has already been started, and Mohali will soon see a sports infrastructure upgrade with this 400m synthetic track coming up at an estimated cost of Rs 9.36 crore. “The work in this regard was started in January, which included survey and mapping among others. After making drawings and completing other formalities, the groundwork was started last month,” said an official privy to the matter.
In the first phase, the track will be prepared and in the second phase a spectators’ stand will be built to cater to the audience. The project is spread approximately on 4 acres, and currently the work for laying the drainage is being completed. As per an estimate, the project will be completed by the end of this year, however the officials are trying to complete it before November. “The work has started, and it will be a great place to practice for our budding and professional athletes,” said the project manager.
The new track will replace the already existing cinder track — made of crushed stones and similar materials for a firm surface. According to sources, in 2011, the then District Planning Committee chairman had announced plans to come up with a 400 m synthetic track at the Sector 78 stadium.
The track is expected to be approved by the International Athletics Federation (IAF) and will also include an aluminium kerbing track, pits for shot put, long jump and triple jump, as well as areas for pole vault, hurdles and discus and javelin throw, provision for water jump (for steeplechase) hurdle. The Sector 78 multipurpose complex is one of the most sought-after facility of the district, which houses facilities for football, volleyball, basketball, handball, kabaddi, kho-kho, badminton (under renovation) and a multipurpose hall for boxing, judo, wrestling and weightlifting.
“This is a much needed and appreciated step by the state government. Our athletes used to visit Panchkula, Patiala or Chandigarh for carrying out their routine practice. With this facility, it will be very convenient for them to have all facilities under one roof at this Sector 78 sports complex,” said District Sports Officer Rupesh Kumar Begra. He further added, “This will be the first facility (synthetic track) in the district to be run by the Punjab Sports Department.”
In addition to being beneficial for the athletes, the facility will also be an idle venue to host national and state events. “Given the connectivity of Sector 78 sports complex, we will be having an advantage of hosting state and national meets here. After getting the possession, the department will follow all procedures with the Athletics Federation of India for getting some major events allotted here,” said a local coach.
