Two Chandigarh school teams qualify for Subroto Cup
The local football teams — Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37 — will represent the city in the Subroto Cup Football Tournament to be held in September.
In the girls’ U-14 final qualifying match, the Sector 22 team defeated Government Senior Secondary School, Khuda Lahora, by a solitary goal. It was an evenly poised match with both teams featuring national-level players. However, the moment of the match for the Sector 22 team came in the 28th minute, when Punam smartly netted the goal.
For the rest of the match, the Sector 22 eves managed to defend the lead and qualified for the Subroto Cup with the final whistle. Principal Anita Dhawan and coach Bhupinder Singh Pinka congratulated the team.
In the boys’ U-17 final, the Sector 37 lads maintained their grip against Strawberry Fields High School, Sector 26, to record a one-sided 4-0 win. After an initial struggle, the Sector 37 team, which is represented by players of Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA), managed break the deadlock in the 25th minute as Harimar opened the team’s account. The very next minute, Vivek doubled the lead and thereafter, Ningombam (46th, 49th) netted a brace.
It was a double delight for the Sector 37 team, as their boys’ U-15 team also qualified for the main event, scheduled to be held in Bengaluru. In the final of U-15 event, the Sector 37 government school team posted a 1-0 win over Strawberry Fields High School. The only goal of the match was scored by Pratham. In the quarterfinal, the side posted a 4-0 win over Government Model High School, Dhanas, followed by a 3-1 win over Vivek High School, Sector 38, in the semifinal.
The school principal congratulated coaches Gurpreet Singh, Sandeep Singh and School DPE Gurpreet Singh.
