SSP Dr Sandeep Garg said, “The main suspect, also a juvenile, is out on a bail in an attempt to murder case registered at the Dera Bassi police station last year. We are investigating how they came in contact with the Kaushal Chaudhary gang. Investigation revealed that an unidentified person delivered the pistol to them. The main motive in the incident appears to be extortion. We are verifying how much money was paid to them.”

On July 20, two bike-borne, masked youths had fired a gunshot outside Apollo Diagnostic Centre in Shakti Nagar locality of Dera Bassi after issuing an extortion threat to the centre around 12:45 pm.

One of the two youths barged into the centre, gave a slip with a foreign contact number (Portugal) to the female receptionist and identified themselves as members of the Kaushal Chaudhary gang. Before the receptionist could understand anything, he left the centre and fired a gunshot before fleeing with their third accomplice waiting outside on the bike.

The threat letter, written in neat handwriting, stated that today, one shot had been fired and if instructions were not followed, 101 bullets could be fired. “Do not take it lightly, the note ended with a warning,” cops said.

After the incident, the suspects fled through the streets to the Gulabhgarh road and then took the Barwala road, the police said.

On a statement of receptionist Usha Rani, a case of extortion and under the Arms Act was registered against the unidentified suspects at the Dera Bassi police station on Saturday.
