Two foot overbridges on NH coming up in Zirakpur

In a major relief to pedestrians, two foot overbridges, near McDonald’s point and Metro point, are nearing completion on the Chandigarh-Ambala national highway here.

The development comes as a major relief to thousands of residents of VIP Road, Dhakoli, Gazipur and Nagla in crossing the busy national highway on foot from one side to the other. One of the foot overbridges near McDonald’s point is almost complete while the one near Metro point is under construction.

Installation points

• The two foot overbridges are being constructed on the national highway near McDonald’s point and Metro point in Zirakpur.
• On one side of the highway are housing societies and schools, and on the other commercial areas, including the VIP Road market, shopping malls, eateries, hotels and showrooms.
• Pedestrians have to brave the grave risk of crossing the national highway with high-speed vehicular movement.
• Office-going women, schoolchildren and elderly find it near impossible to cross the road during morning and evening rush hours.

On one side of the national highway are housing societies and schools, and on the other is the commercial area, including the VIP Road market, shopping malls, eateries, hotels and showrooms.

Pedestrians had to brave the grave risk of crossing the national highway with high-speed vehicular movement.

Office-going women, schoolchildren and elderly complained that it was near impossible for them to cross the road during morning and evening rush hours.

“Every day, we are concerned about our family member’s safety while they go to office or come back home. It is extremely risky to cross the road here. It is difficult for women wearing sarees and children with heavy schoolbags and office-goers to cross the road here. Imagine crossing it in the dark with the glare of headlights. Many a times, pedestrians have met with accidents in a rush to catch an auto-rickshaw or bus on the other side,” said Ramgopal Sharma, a Zirakpur resident whose wife and school-going children cross the Metro point twice a day.

“Till the moment the family member comes back home from work, there is always a lingering concern about their safety. It is really a welcome development. Hope people use it to avoid mishaps,” said another resident.

Officials said the foot overbridges would be equipped with lifts to make them more utilitarian and convenient for pedestrians.
