Two get 5-yr jail for snatching gold earrings of woman
A local court has sentenced Mohit and Suraj, both residents of Mohali district, to undergo five years of rigorous imprisonment after convicting them in a snatching case. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 27,000 on each.
The police had registered the case on April 29, 2024, against the accused for the commission of offences punishable under Sections 379-A and 411 of the IPC, 1860, on the complaint of a woman, Bhupinder Kaur. She said that she, along with her family, was residing in Burail, Sector 45-A, Chandigarh.
On the day of the incident around 6 am, she was returning towards her home from Sector 46 after a morning walk. When she reached in front of a taxi stand, which is near the Civil Hospital, a boy came running from her behind and snatched her gold earrings. When she raised a hue and cry, another boy came on a black colour Activa and they both fled. On the basis of the statement of complainant, an FIR was registered under Section 379-A IPC against unknown persons.
During investigation, the accused, Mohit and Suraj, were arrested and the gold earrings were recovered from them. The police also recovered the Activa scooter used by them in the crime.
On completion of investigation a challan against the accused was presented in the court. Charges were framed against the accused to which he pleaded not guilty and claimed a trial.
The counsel of the accused claimed that the accused had been falsely implicated in the case. Public prosecutor for the state said that the prosecution had proved the case. After hearing the arguments the court held the accused guilty and sentenced them to undergo five years of rigorous imprisonment.
The court rejected the plea of leniency of the accused. The court said that snatching cases were being reported almost every other day. Therefore, in order to curb this menace, it was required to be dealt with stern hands.
