Chandigarh, June 17

Additional Sessions Judge Anshu Shukla rejected the bail applications of two persons arrested for betting on IPL matches on May 31. A sum of Rs 17.40 lakh was allegedly recovered from them.

The accused, Hitesh Hans, 34, and Raju Thapa, 30, both residents of Sector 63, were booked under Sections 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 13/3/67 of the Public Gambling Act at the Sector 39 police station.

As per the FIR, the police had received secret information that two persons were gambling in the open ground near a school in Sector 38 and were also carrying a huge amount that they had earned through betting on IPL 2022 matches.

The police raided the spot and arrested the accused with Rs 11.67 lakh. Another Rs 5.80 lakh were recovered from Hans’ car.

The public prosecutor opposed the bail applications on the grounds that another accused Sanjay Khurana also applied for interim bail but the plea was dismissed by the Additional Sessions Judge.

On the other hand, the counsel for the accused submitted that the two accused were innocent and were implicated in a false case. He claimed that the police made up a story and had arrested the applicants from their residence. It was further contended that no offence punishable under Section 420 of the IPC was made out against the applicants.

After hearing of the arguments, the court dismissed the bail applications without commenting on the merit of the case.
