Mohali, July 26
The police have arrested two members of a gang of thieves involved in car thefts and recovered nine SUVs from them. Suspects identified as Rohtak residents Ramesh and Amit, have been booked under Sections 303(2), 317(2), 318(4), 336(2), 336(3), 338, 340(2) and 61(2) of the BNS at Sohana police station on July 14.
Cops said the first Ramesh was arrested, on the basis of which mastermind Amit was arrested from Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi while looking to flee abroad.
In the preliminary investigation, it has come out that this gang is spread in different parts of India.
Mohali SSP Sandeep Garg said, “They used to buy accidental cars (total loss) from different states and kept their papers with them and dismantled the cars and then according to those papers they stole a luxury car of the same make/model/color and used the engines of those cars and tamper the chassis number.
The main handler of the gang is a resident of Dimapur, Nagaland named Khiheto Achomi who used to sell all the stolen cars to different customers, as far as in Myanmar and Nepal.
So far, the gang has stolen and supplied more than 400 cars some after crossing the international border, cops said.
DSP Gursher Singh Sandhu said, “The gang operated widely in all parts of the country. The vehicle used to be stolen by someone, scrapped vehicle used to be procured by another, documentation used to be done by a different person and finally the vehicle used to be sold by someone else.” Cops said further investigation in the case was on.
