Zirakpur: The police arrested two persons and recovered a foreign-made pistol, seven live rounds and 500 gm of heroin from their possession near the Chhat light point. The suspects, Sukhwinder Singh, alias Nikka, and Lovepreet Singh, alias Lovely, are said to be close aides of jailed gangster Gurdeep Singh, alias Manna, of Barnala. Manna is presently lodged in a jail at Hoshiarpur. A case was registered against the suspects under the NDPS Act and the Arms Act at the Zirakpur police station on July 11. TNS

Traps set after leopard scare

Mohali: Officials of the Forest and Wildlife Conservation Department have set up a cage and trap cameras following reports of leopard sightings near IISER and NABI. Sighting has, however, not been confirmed. Forest Divisional Officer (Wildlife) Kulraj Singh said on Monday the department had issued an advisory. The two campuses and adjoining rainwater drain area have been surveyed. He said no leopard paw marks were found in the area. The department urged people not to panic and give any information regarding spotting to the department. TNS

Biker hurt in road mishap

Chandigarh: Anil Kumar, a resident of Sector 38 (West) reported that a car driver sped away after hitting his motorcycle near the Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, here on July 11. The, who suffered injuries in the mishap, was admitted to the PGI. The registration number of the car was noted down, the police said. A case under Sections 279, 337 and 427 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the car driver at the Sector 34 police station. TNS

60 units of blood collected at camp

Panchkula: As many as 60 units of blood were collected at a special blood donation camp organised by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Force at the General Hospital in Sector 6 here on Tuesday. The camp was conducted as part of the nationwide Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav that commemorates 75 years of Independence. Besides ITBP troops, a number of officers also donated blood on the occasion. TNS

Gerald Cordemy to coach Karman

Chandigarh: Renowned strength and conditioning coach Gerald Cordemy, who has previously worked with tennis icon Serena Williams, will now train upcoming Indian star Karman Kaur Thandi at the RoundGlass Tennis Academy here. Cordemy, who hails from France, has earlier worked as Head of Strength and Conditioning at the Qatar Tennis Federation, Mouratoglou Academy, and All In Tennis Academy, apart from being personal fitness trainer for top-level players such as Williams, David Goffin, Jeremy Chardy and Alexei Popyrin. “I am happy with my choice to come to this academy and share my experience with the team. Adi (Aditya Sachdeva) is one of the best tennis coaches I have met in my career and we are on the same page on how to help Karman reach her full potential and enter the elite level of the WTA circuit,” said Cordemy. 3 dancesport athletes shine

Chandigarh: Trained by experts of the Dancesport Association of Haryana (DSAH), three tricity-based dancesport enthusiasts – Aashna Bagri, Anita and Navdeep Singh – stole the limelight at the 12th National Dancesport Championship held in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The event was organised by the All-India Dancesport Federation. According to Barsha Rana, Navdeep and Anita were trained for the past six months. She said Aashna Bagri was Haryana’s 19-year-old prodigy. She won three world titles in salsa and now bagged two gold medals for Haryana in the 12th National Dancesport Championship.
