The court of Sessions Judge Ved Prakash Sirohi today awarded five years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on two persons in a case of snatching. The court had convicted the two youths, Arif (21) and Shadab (24), on August 7.

In July 2022 Namita Jariyal, a resident of Sector 15 had lodged a complaint regarding two unidentified youths having snatched her ‘mangalsutra’. While the police had failed to trace the suspects during the investigation of the case, one of the suspects, Arif, was arrested in connection with another case and confessed to having snatched the chain, too. It was later recovered from Shadab, his accomplice.

The counsel for the youths pleaded for a lenient view towards them as they were the only earning members of their families. Meanwhile, public prosecutor Akash Tanwar pointed out that both the convicts had been involved in crimes previously, too. The court observed that the convicts had, in furtherance of their common intention, snatched the chain. “As such, the convicts do not deserve any leniency in the matter of sentence,” it observed.— TNS
