Zirakpur, February 27
The newly elected councillors of the Congress held their first post-election meeting at the Municipal Council office today. The meeting was chaired by Udayvir Singh Dhillon, Councillor from Ward No. 12 and son of Dera Bassi Congress in-charge Deepinder Singh Dhillon. It is pertinent to mention here that no notification has been issued for the post of council president. The Municipal Council was represented by Executive Officer Sandeep Tewari.
Dhillon said, “Today’s meeting was held to acquaint the newly elected councillors with MC officials so that development work can take place without hindrance. We will leave no stone unturned in the development of the city.”
Most of the women councillors were represented by their husband during the meeting. The Punjab government had reserved 50 per cent seats for women during the council elections to bring encourage active women participation in the development process. However, the overwhelming majority of husband attending at the meet proved otherwise.
Of the total 31 wards of Zirakpur, the Congress has won 23 wards while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) clinched eight wards.
The Congress has 14 women councillors in the house while the SAD has two women among the eight winning councillors. Due to the large number of women, it was hoped that the house would be dominated by women and special arrangements would be made for women. However, in today’s meeting, only four out of 14 Congress women councillors were present.
