‘ONE NATION, ONE STUDENT ID’ INITIATIVEc
The Ministry of Education has asked the educational institutions to curate a 12-digit automated permanent account registry (APAAR)
ID for students, which shall serve as the link to the Academic Bank of Credits. With this, the government aims to integrate the educational record of students from school to higher education institutions, including rewards and scholarships, under the ‘One Nation, One Student ID’ plan.
The UGC has also asked the universities to update the credit information of exams conducted this year by June 2025.
It is mandatory for all higher education institutions to make Academic Bank of Credits accounts of all their students and upload the data in it. As per the new provisions of the Choice-Based Credit System in the National Education Policy-2020, the data in the portal remains safe in case of transfer to another institute or enrolment in another institute and can be accessed from anywhere.
Commenting on the development, PU Vice-Chancellor Renu Vig said officials were already working to streamline the data on the portal and the process would be completed soon.
The Academic Bank of Credits is a digital platform launched by the UGC to store the educational credits of the students. Through this, the credits of various courses completed by students and degrees received by them are digitally stored, making it feasible for them to present proof of their educational qualifications anywhere.
