UT archers win gold in archery championship

In a proud moment, the local girls’ sub-junior archery team won gold medal in the 42nd Sub-Junior (Recurve, Compound and Indian Round) National (Boys and Girls) Archery Championship, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. The team of Rhythm, Raijas Kaur Grewal, Japman Kaur Bhuller and Jiana Kumar claimed the top position by overpowering Maharashtra 6-0 in the final of the meet.

Earlier, in the semi-final, the city girls edged past Andhra Pradesh by a slight margin. While the Andhra girls posted 4.24, the local team managed to get 4.26 on the board to march into the final.

In their previous matches, Chandigarh blanked Gujarat 6-2, and Tamil Nadu 5-1. Jiana Kuma, Japman Kaur Bhuller and Rhythm led the charge. In the ranking rounds, the city girls finished second with 1,976 points behind Maharashtra (2,023 points) and ahead of Andhra Pradesh (1,973).

Meanwhile, in the mixed team (ranking), the team of Jiana and Ajinkya Jatwani finished third with 1,354 points, behind Maharashtra (1,371 points) and Haryana (1,358 points). In the boys’ recurve (ranking) event, the city lads finished at 14th position with 1,968 points on the board.

In the opening round of the medal category, Chandigarh team of Ajinkya Jatwani, Gurhans Singh and Devshlok Kaushi was ousted by Rajasthan 0-6.

Jiana equals record

Meanwhile, city’s Jiana equaled the national record in the 60m (ranking round) of the sub-junior category. In the girls’ recurve event, she posted a total of 689 (343-first and 346-second) points to top the ranking round. She will be playing in the medal round tomorrow. A student of Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, Jiana trains under coach Anurag Kamal, along with all the medal winner girls’ in the Chandigarh team, at the GKM Archery Academy, Sector 39.

Japman Kaur Bhuller is a student of Vivek High School, Sector 38, and Rhythm is pursuing her studies at KBDAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 7. Raijas Kaur Grewal represents Strawberry Fields High School, Sector 26.
