Chandigarh heritage furniture to go under hammer in London
Chandigarh, October 9
Heritage furniture designed by French architects Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret will be auctioned in London on October 14.
As many as 10 heritage items of the UT, with an international worth of more than Rs1.5 crore, will be auctioned by Bonham, an auction house. The items to go under the hammer include chairs, armchairs and tables designed for the Punjab and Haryana High Court and administrative buildings.
“There is an urgent need for the government to intervene in the matter,” said Ajay Jagga, a member of the Heritage Protection Cell, Chandigarh.
Trafficking in cultural property of Chandigarh is going on for the past 10 years. “The UN may also be approached, reminding it of its international commitment to the UNESCO to combat trafficking of cultural objects,” Jagga wrote in a letter to the Union Minister of External Affairs. — TNS
