According to the tender details, the work will include the construction of a multipurpose room and additional toilet at the ground and first floor and renovation of the house.

An official of the Engineering Department said the repair and renovation work was to be carried out in the house after more than a decade. The tender had been floated only after getting approval from the Urban Planning Department, he added.

Social activist RK Garg said there was no need for spending a huge amount of money on the renovation of houses allotted to officers.

Garg said: “We need to review the expenses that are being incurred on the renovation of houses of the officers and the Chandigarh Administration has to take a call to stop all such wasteful expenditure for future.”

“This is not a time for such expenses as we are facing financial crunch. At present, we need to save every penny to fight Covid-19 pandemic,” he added.
