UT police rearrest 2 murder convicts

Two persons, who are convicts in two different murder cases and were absconding, have been rearrested by the UT police. One of the convicts was absconding since 2005.

One of the convicts, identified as Charanjeev Galhotra, alias Sunny, has been rearrested in a murder that took place in 1997.

The police said complainant Sushil Kumar had reported that on July 8, 1997, Charanjeev Galhotra, alias Sunny, and Jatinder Bhatia, alias Rinkoo, kidnapped his friend Vinay Aggarwal from his house in Sector 32 in a blue Maruti car.

Later, he came to know that his friend Vinay Aggarwal was murdered by the accused. During the course of investigation, the accused were arrested. After trial in the lower court, they were convicted with life imprisonment in 2001.

After completing four years of punishment, Charanjeev Galhotra filed a petition against the conviction in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, following which he was released on bail on court directions. During the hearing, the High Court rejected the appeal of the accused. However, despite surrendering, the accused was absconding since 2005.

In another case, the UT police arrested a murder convict, identified as Renu Bains.

The police said a murder case was registered in 2012 at the Sector 19 police station on the statement of Prem Chand Sharma. He had alleged that his younger sister, Suresh Kumari, alias Pooja, was missing since July 13, 2012, and he had doubt that his sister was kidnapped and murdered by her husband, Vajinder, a resident of Sector 20.

During the course of investigation, accused Vajinder and Renu Bains were arrested. After the trial of the case, the accused persons were convicted with life imprisonment, along with fine, in 2014. After completing three years of punishment, Renu filed a petition against the conviction in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, after which she was released on bail.

During the hearing, the High Court rejected the appeal. However, despite surrendering, the convict kept absconding since 2017.

The police produced both accused before the court and sent them to judicial custody.
