Chandigarh, February 14

A 30-year-old judicial magistrate died, while his friend was injured after their SUV rammed into a signboard pole on the road separating Sector 16 and 23 in the wee hours of Friday.

The magistrate, Sahil Singla, a native of Sangrur, was posted at Pathankot. He was accompanied by his friend Pahulpreet Singh (32), an advocate, who sustained injuries.

Sahil had come to the city to attend a wedding. He was staying at the Chandigarh Judicial Academy in Sector 43, from where they left for the night food street outside Panjab University.

Sahil’s wife Radhika, a trainee judicial officer, along with her friend Prabhjot Kaur, was following Sahil in another car. She was the one who rushed both the injured to the nearby GMSH in Sector 16, from where Sahil was referred to the PGI, where he succumbed to injuries. His friend was admitted to a private hospital in Mohali.

The police said they had received the information about the accident around 2.30 am, following which a police team reached the spot and found that the injured were already taken to hospital.

Sources said the SUV was probably driven at a high speed, following which Sahil, who was behind the wheel, lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the accident.

All airbags of the SUV got inflated after it rammed into the pole. A forensic team visited the spot in the morning and inspected the vehicle.

Sahil’s autopsy was conducted at the PGI and the body was handed over to his father Pardeep Singla. Several judges and Sahil’s friends also reached the PGI.
