Illegal vendors have encroached on pavements, parking lots and other open spaces at the Sector 22 market in front of the ISBT, Sector 17.

Only registered vendors selling essentials such as tea were permitted here initially. Food stalls, mobile cover sellers and other vendors have gradually encroached on public spaces with no fear of law. With encroachers occupying spaces, little room has been left for visitors to walk. “They keep insisting visitors to buy their goods. It is sheer harassment. Vendor activities must be regulated here,” said Shaminder Singh, a visitor.

A shopkeeper said: “When only essential vendors are allowed here, how come all sorts of vendors are operating? They have spoiled the whole market.” — TNS
