Vigilance probe ordered into free bookings of Chandigarh community centres
A vigilance inquiry has been marked into an alleged misappropriation of funds of crores in free bookings of the community centres under fake names. Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar has recommended the probe following the directions of Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla
Besides, the Commissioner has also ordered the transfer all nine employees working in the booking branch including OSD with immediate effect. The decision was taken as the office resumed work today after a three-day holiday.
Addressing the move, Babla said it was essential to ensure transparency and improve the efficiency of the department. Citing growing concerns over the functioning of the booking branch in the booking of Community centres issue, she said such action was needed to restore public confidence and uphold administrative standards.
The investigation aims to uncover any irregularities, negligence, or misconduct by the staff, and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken based on the findings.
The Mayor assured that civic services will continue without disruption and under the supervision of newly deputed staff. She reaffirmed her commitment to clean and accountable governance and urged all departments to operate with integrity and professionalism.
Babla said that the no guilty person will be spared.
Earlier in the day, a delegation of the Aam Aadmi Party had met the Commissioner demanded investigation into the allegations of misappropriation of funds.
The delegation was led by AAP local unit president Vijaypal Sing, who reiterated the demand for vigilance or CBI probe in the alleged scam.
As per the present policy, free booking is being provided to the underprivileged for marriages. A recommendation of the area councillor is required for the booking.
The issue of free bookings first came to light when a person was approached by someone posing as an employee of MC and assured of discount in the booking. He said that he paid Rs 50, 000 to the employee but when he got the receipt the amount was mentioned a zero as a free booking .
