Voters architects of India’s destiny: Governor
Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria today appealed to citizens to ensure 100 per cent voting in elections. Each vote was important to shape the future of the country, Kataria said at a function organised at Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 42, to mark National Voters’ Day.
Kataria who was the chief guest highlighted the importance of democracy and the role of voters. He said in a democracy, the power was with the people and the leaders were only their representatives.
He lauded the role of Election Commission of India, calling it independent and above the government.
The Governor said the election process has undergone major changes over time, making it more transparent and technologically advanced.
Earlier, where vote counting was done manually, now the process has become faster and accurate through EVMs, he added.
“The voter of India should think that I am the creator of India’s fate. The fate of India will be decided by pressing my button,” he said.
Kataria also emphasised that the Constitution not only gives us rights, but also makes us realise our duties. He described voting as not only a right, but a responsibility towards the country.
On the occasion, new voters were welcomed and were honoured with ‘Proud to be a Voter - Ready to Vote’ badges. This year, the theme of National Voters’ Day ‘Nothing like voting, we will definitely vote’ gave the message to the public to understand the importance of voting and adopt it as a responsibility.
The Governor said all citizens should rise above caste, religion and language and vote to strengthen the roots of democracy. Ceremonies were also organised at all 614 polling stations in Chandigarh where voter ID cards were distributed to new voters and they were informed about the election process.
