Weekly meet, board results analysis: Chandigarh sets ball rolling for school reforms

In a bid to enhance the educational outcomes of government schools, the Department of School Education, the Chandigarh Administration announced the implementation of strict new measures at government schools.

To start with, Education Secretary Prerna Puri initiated a proactive approach to enhance the quality of education in government schools by dedicating each Friday to visit a Government School where she will be meeting 10 Principals/Heads on a Midday Meal lunch and closely monitor educational practices and teaching methodologies. The first meeting was held at the Sector 12 school today.

The secretary said the the infrastructure and the qualified teaching community available at government schools should leave no question about students not doing well.

Each principal and teacher, Puri said, will have to be made accountable for any lapses leading to student failure or having compartment in the board exams. Due credit will also be given to teachers and principals whose students are high achievers.

A parent teacher meeting (PTM) to review the Class X and XII board results of students who had compartment will also be held soon and all schools will ensure that extra classes for the students.

The district education officer will prepare a detailed analysis of class X and XII board results detailing the pass, compartment and failed student. The report will include the demography, the subject constraint and other shortcomings, if any at the level of the school. Such constraints shall be removed on priority.

The teachers who have maximum students under compartment or those who failed the exam will be present at the meeting to explain their position. ACR of the teachers to be updated for increased accountability.

The PTMs to be held tomorrow for the parents of the students who have a compartment in the board exams where teachers of the respective subjects will sit in the meetings to discuss and plan the way forward with the parents and principals and teachers to review their results and ensure extra classes for the children who have a compartment to ensure that all students are able to make the grade in the compartment results.

Adopt an adult leaner

In another innovative initiative aimed at bridging the gap between generations and fostering a culture of community engagement, the department has come up with the “Adopt an adult learner” initiative, wherein teachers will take on the responsibility to educate adults.

The senior officials of the department are directly monitoring the initiative and 7,900 adult learners have already benefitted from it.

Rewarding achievers

To instil confidence in children, meanwhile, the Department of School Education will felicitate the government schools students as well as the institutions that performed well in the recent Board exam results.
