With Rs 125-crore boost, Chandigarh MC to revamp city roads first
The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) is set to improve the city's road conditions first with the recent approval of Rs 125 crore from the Government of India.
Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla announced that the corporation will prioritise essential works, focusing on repairing and maintaining roads, as well as upgrading street lights.
According to Mayor Babla, officers have been directed to initiate work on the most critical areas first. The corporation plans to purchase new street lights to replace damaged ones, enhancing the overall safety and ambiance of the city.
Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT, had handed over the letter of approval to the Mayor on Wednesday.
An internal survey conducted by the MC revealed that at least 60 roads are in ‘very poor’ condition, while 23 roads are categorised as ‘poor’. These roads have not been re-carpeted in over five years, and the corporation plans to commence work as soon as the monsoon season ends.
The MC is responsible for maintaining approximately 1,860 km of roads, accounting for around 60% of the city's total road length. With the transfer of V3 roads to the administration, the corporation will focus on improving V4, V5, and V6 roads under its jurisdiction.
All BJP councillors met with Mayor Babla to congratulate her on receiving the grant. They submitted lists of pending works to be done in their respective wards, ensuring that the funds are utilised effectively.
