Woman awarded 10-yr jail for carrying banned injections

A 30-year-old Panchkula-based woman has to stay behind bars for 10 years for carrying banned injections.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge awarded 10-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) to Paramjit Kaur, alias, Manjit Kaur, a resident of Mankya village. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the convict.

A police team had recovered 100 Buprenorphine injections and 100 Pheniramine Mallate from her during a routine checking on August 2, 2017.

Following the recovery, a case under Section 22 of the NDPS Act was registered at Sector 49 police station against her.

Pleading leniency, Kaur said she has old mother to look after and is the sole bread earner of her family. However, the public prosecutor submitted that the convict should be given maximum sentence.

“The instances of the NDPS Act are on alarming rise and the drugs have directly affected the youth and entire social fabric of the society. As per the notification of 2009 the entire quantity is to be considered to find out whether the recovery is commercial quantity or not instead of the pure contents of the contraband,” observed the judge.

Keeping in view the provisions as well as the quantity of the injections recovered from the convict, the court awarded 10-year sentence under under Section 22 of the NDPS Act .
