A local court has sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for killing her two-year-old child at Burail here.

The police arrested Roopa on a complaint filed by her husband Dashrath. He told the police that on January 25, 2020, he left for work in the morning. Later, he came to know that Roopa, along with his son, had left home without telling him anything. The police filed a missing report.

Next day, he opened his bed for changing the bed sheet and found his son’s body in it. He said his wife used to quarrel with him. They were blessed with two kids, a two-year-old son and a girl who was born in 2019.

As Roopa would often complain she was unhappy with him, he asked her to get separated mutually, but she did not agree. She once threatened that she would kill both her children and leave him.

Dashrath said her daughter died earlier under suspicious circumstances. He told the police that he suspected that her wife had killed the girl child.

The police presented a challan under Sections 302, 201 of the IPC in the court against Roopa. Finding a prima facie case, the court framed charges, to which she pleaded not guilty and claimed a trial.

Prosecutor JP Singh said the prosecution had proved the case beyond a shadow of doubt. He sought an exemplary punishment to the accused. The counsel of the accused claimed that she was falsely implicated in the case.

After hearing the arguments, Dr Harpreet Kaur, Additional Sessions Judge, sentenced Roopa to life imprisonment and also slapped a fine of Rs 25, 000 on her.
