Chandigarh: A 35-year-old woman has been arrested by the police with 19.96-gm heroin. The suspect, Parkash Kaur, was nabbed from near the circus ground in Sector 17 on December 10. The police said the suspect gave a wrong address of Sector 18. It was later found that she is a resident of Phase V, Mohali. The police have registered a case under the NDPS Act at the Sector 17 police station. TNS

Smart phones donated

Chandigarh: Under the 'Donate a Phone' campaign started by the Forum for Awareness of National Security (FANS), Chandigarh Chapter, 20 new smart phones were distributed among underprivileged children at Government Model High School, Sector 19. At the event organised by FANS, DSP Ram Gopal distributed the smart phones to the students in the presence of Raj Kishor, general secretary of FANS, and Sanjay Walia, principal of the school. The campaign has been started by the forum to provide phone and tabs to underprivileged children to help them continue their education through online classes in Covid times. New Dean of Alumni Relations

Chandigarh: Prof Anupama Sharma of Dr SS Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Panjab University, took over as Dean, Alumni Relations, and Secretary, PUAA, from Prof Deepti Gupta, Chairperson, Department of English, PU, for a period of one year. Sharma has been a professor at the UICET since July 2011. She has over 20 years of experience of teaching and research. She said all steps would be taken in line with already initiated activities for PUAA. Her focus will be on strengthening the Alumni Association and organising the global meet scheduled for January 2021. TNS

Hospital opened in city Beautiful

Chandigarh: Faith Hospital, a dedicated centre for psychiatric treatment and drug de-addiction, started its operations in the city on Friday. Dr Damanjit Kaur, senior psychiatrist and co-founder of the hospital, said the hospital would offer all essential services related to mental disorders. We will provide affordable and 24X7 treatment to mentally ill and drug addicts in well-equipped indoor facilities while maintaining their confidentiality, said Dr Amit Bansal, founder director of the hospital. Dr Damanjit Kaur said as per data, women were about twice as likely as men to develop major depression. TNS

Organ donation awareness camp

Chandigarh: On the occasion of International Mountain Day, a blood and organ donation awareness camp was organised by Shri Shiv Kanwar Mahasangh Charitable Trust and Mahamai Mansa Devi Charitable Bhandara Committee. It was organised with the help of Chandigarh Police staff and the Market Welfare Association, Sector 31-D. A total of 53 persons donated blood and seven persons pledged organs. TNS
