Kharar: The death toll in the accident in which a Tata Safari rammed into a dhaba on the Chajjumajra-Baryali road on Monday rose to two when Satya Devi, aged around 65, who was seriously injured and admitted to the GMCH, Sector 32, succumbed to her injuries. Ravi Kumar (14) was killed while six persons were seriously injured in the mishap. OC

Woman ends her life over dowry

Chandigarh: A 30-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan. She has been identified as Inder Kala. A case under Sections 304-B and 34 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 39 police station on a complaint of her father, Ram Jeevan Rai, a resident of Darbhanga, Bihar, who alleged that Manish (victim’s husband), Ajay (father-in-law) and Moni Devi (mother-in-law), residents of Sector 56, Chandigarh, were harassing his daughter for dowry. Manish and Ajay have been arrested in this case. TNS

PU declares holiday on Jan 2

Chandigarh: Panjab University (PU) has declared a public holiday on January 2, 2020 on account of Parkash Purb of Sri Guru Gobind Singh, instead of February 1, 2020, in PU and its institutions/regional centres/offices/affiliated colleges located in Chandigarh and in the state of Punjab. NSS camp ends at Panjab varsity

Chandigarh:A valedictory function was held on the concluding day of the NSS camp. Prof Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, Panjab University, was the guest of honour. He appreciated the volunteers and coordinators for their efforts during towards the societal empowerment. He shared his personal experience with social service with students. BSNL employee honoured

Chandigarh: On the eve of New Year, the PGMT, BSNL, Chandigarh, JS Sahota (ITS) said the Telecom Secretary, Government of India, Anshu Parkash, has recently presented a National award to ‘Bharat Sanchar Seva Padak – 2018’ winner Bandhan Preet Singh, who is working as Junior Telecom Officer (EB) in Principal General Manager Telecom, BSNL Chandigarh. The award comprises of Rs 1 lakh in cash, a silver medal, citation and a 10-day tour in India with family.

One caught with heroin

Ambala: The district police have arrested a resident of Yamunanagar with 4.26 gm of heroin, officials said here on Tuesday. According to the police, the suspect, Raman, was signalled to stop at a check post in Sector 1, Ambala City, and his search yielded the contraband. The suspect will be produced before a local court on Wednesday. TNS

Minor girl abducted

Ambala: A minor girl had been reportedly abducted after being lured for marriage, the police said here on Tuesday. According to information, Parveen Kumar of Saha near here had reported to the local police that his minor sister had been abducted by Mandeep after luring her for marriage. The police have registered a case of abduction against the suspect and launched further probe into the matter, the officials added. TNS

One arrested for assault

Ambala: The district police have arrested Gaurav of Shahzadpur near here in a case of assault, officials said here on Tuesday. According to the police, Gurcharan of Shahzadpur had reported to the local police that the suspect had assaulted and threatened him with dire consequences on December 26. The suspect were remanded in 14-day judicial custody, the officials added. TNS

Four held in dowry case

Ambala: The district police have arrested four persons – Narender Kumar, Ameer Chand, Surjit Kumar and Bhana Ram of Barara near here – in a case of dowry harassment, officials said here on Tuesday. According to the police, a local woman had lodged a complaint that the suspects, along with three women members of their family, had been harassing her and threatening her with dire consequences for bringing inadequate dowry ever since she was married. The court remanded Narender in one-day police custody. TNS
