World Disability Day observed at PGIMER
The Department of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery at the PGIMER, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the National Rehabilitation Institute observed the World Disability Day under the inspiring theme ‘azadi from deafness’. The event was held at the lecture theatre complex, Nehru Hospital, PGIMER, and focussed on groundbreaking advancements in cochlear implantation and hearing rehabilitation to empower individuals with hearing disabilities and promote accessible solutions.
The ceremony was inaugurated by Prof BNS Walia, former Director, PGIMER, by lighting the ceremonial lamp. The dignitaries present on occasion were Dr RK Ratho, Dean Academic, and Dr Jaimanti Bakshi, head of department, ENT, and faculty members. The keynote address was delivered by the guest of honour SK Mehta, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ladakh. This thoughtfully curated programme showcased insights from renowned experts.
Dr Hetal Marfatia Patel, prof and head of the ENT Department, Seth GS Medical College, Mumbai, discussed strategies to enhance outcomes in cochlear implantation. Prof Sharon Cushing from Sick Kids Hospital, Toronto, highlighted the critical role of early etiological assessment in improving access to bilateral cochlear implantation for children.
Dr Anav Rattan, Bonded Senior Resident at Seth GS Medical College, explored expanded indications for cochlear implantation, while Dr Bhawana Jain, a prominent audiologist from Chandigarh, delved into recent advancements in cochlear implant rehabilitation.
The event was attended by faculty and students of the Department of ENT and Audiology & Speech Hearing Unit.
