Chandigarh: The police have arrested a youth for allegedly possessing 20 gram heroin. The police said the accused Arshdeep Singh (22), a resident of district Faridkot, was arrested from Sector 23. A case was registered under the NDPS Act at Sector 17 police station. TNS

One held for house theft

Chandigarh: A Sector 20 resident has been arrested in charge of house theft. Complainant, a resident of Hallo Majra, reported that unknown people stole gold jewellery and two mobile phones from her house between February 5 and 11. Police was informed about the incident and a case was registered at Sector 31 police station. Later, accused Narinder Kumar alias Mannu (35) was arrested. TNS

Man nabbed for pickpocketing

Chandigarh: UT police have arrested a man for stealing a mobile phone from a woman at Sector 22 market. Complainant Poonam Rani, a resident of Kharar, reported that an unidentified person stole her mobile phone from her jacket’s pocket. During the investigation, accused Suraj Kumar, a native of Jharkhand, was arrested and two mobile phones have been recovered from him.

254 species of birds spotted

Chandigarh: As many as 254 bird species have been spotted during the 12-hour-long Chandigarh Bird Race, an annual event to count birds. On Sunday, a total 15 teams set out and managed to list 254 of the total 436 species on the list of the Inter-State Chandigarh Region. It was marginally more than last year’s total of 236 species. Chandigarh: The CMYS, the youth wing of Mar Thoma Church in Chandigarh, in association with social influencer Atul Rajput has initiated ‘Revitalize’, a cleanliness drive in the city on Sunday. The joint efforts were a part of Rajput’s ongoing ambitious 75-day Swachch Abhiyan campaign. TNS

PIS announces trial schedule

Chandigarh: Mohali: Punjab State Institute of Sports (PIS) has announced the schedule of trials for 2024-25 session PIS residential wings of Mohali, Amritsar, Patiala, Mohali, Bathinda, Ropar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Barnala, Tarn Taran, Sri Anandpur Sahib, Mahilpur, Phagwara and Dasuha. For the selection of players in different age groups in these wings, trials will be held from February 15 to 19 at different places according to the sport and age group. TNS

St Joseph’s Academy log win

Chandigarh: Krish Madan (3/26) and Arindham Chadha (49) helped St Joseph’s Cricket Academy defeat Gyan Jyoti School, Mohali by 63 runs in the Super League Cricket Tournament. Bating first, St Joseph’s posted 185 in 24.1 overs with the help of Chadha, Himanshu (21), Bhavik Goel (12) and Yash Mittal (12) Keshav Verma claimed two wickets. In reply, the Mohali team could score 119/4 in allotted overs. Japdeep Singh (11) was the sole main wicket taker. Madan’s effort was supported by Bhavik Goel (1/10). In the second match, Team Liberals defeated Chauhan Cricket Academy by 85 runs. TNS

Kirpal Singh, 95, win two medals

Chandigarh: 95-year-old athlete Kirpal Singh won two medals in the 43rd National Veteran Athletics Championship organised by Tamil Nadu Masters Athletics Association. He claimed the first position in the 1,000m race walk by clocking 11:42.98s and the second gold in the 100m race (50.19s). TNS

PU allows CCA to offer PhD degree

Chandigarh: Panjab University has recognised Chandigarh College of Architecture (CCA), Sector 12 as a research centre for pursuing PhD degree in Architect & Built Environment. “It was a much-awaited decision. I welcome this decision as CCA is a premier architecture learning institute. It will emerge as India’s top ranking institute in research and will help the Indian researchers to have all facilities under one roof,” said Dr Sangeeta Bagga, Principal-cum-Head of Department, CCA.
